How to Write About Sports

Sport is a cultural field of activity in which people voluntarily enter into a relationship with other people, in order to compare their respective abilities and skills in the art of movement – according to self-imposed or adopted rules and on the basis of socially accepted ethical values.

Unlike other leisure activities, which are usually based on physical action, sports require skill and mental action as well as head-to-head competition. A variety of sports exist, from individual contests to large multi-player events.

In order to write about a sports event, you must know its rules and ethos. Despite the same set of formal rules, amateur soccer players and professional athletes use different conventions when playing the game. For example, amateurs often suspend the offside rule whereas professionals must always play on the same side of the ball when defending it.
